Typically, when we ask for something from our extended TLC family, we’re looking for help on the volunteer-front - calling for fosters, folks to help us with meet and greets, and people who can help behind the scenes of the rescue.

While we are always looking to find people to help fill those roles, this message is going to be much more candid and direct. 

We need donations; funds to help us manage some very special cases that have come into our rescue and into our hearts.

We’ve nicknamed them our “ortho dogs.” These are dogs that have experienced special circumstances in their lives that require surgeries and amputations. These procedures have put a big strain on TLC financially, so we’re asking for your help.

Chicken Bone is with one of our fosters now and is currently adoptable. Before he arrived here, we believe he may have been caught in a bear trap, as the bones in one of his paws was severed clean from the wrist joint. Despite being in a splint to try to heal it, he wouldn’t even try to walk on it and it merely dragged along behind him.  So he could have a better quality of life, the decision was made to amputate the leg. That doesn’t stop him though - he runs and plays and doesn’t let the fact that he’s without one limb slow him down!

In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Snow Cone had a freak accident that broke a growth plate in his shin. This is a very common injury in puppies, but this time it was serious enough that he required surgery. Our partners at United Vision Pet Partners performed the successful operation, but it was costly - nearly $7000. He was just a 4 month old puppy when he came to TLC in early October, but he’s already stolen our hearts with his energy, puppy cuddles, and endless curiosity. Once he’s fully healed from the surgery, he’ll be able to run, play, and snuggle with no pain, just like any other dog.

Then there’s Avalon. She’s currently still with one of our shelter partners, but we’re paying for her medical treatment until she’s healthy enough to travel to TLC and find her furever home. We believe she was either stepped on or hit by a car as a puppy. In either case, she’s had some major trauma, to the point that two of her legs are deformed and amputation is possible. She’s currently undergoing physical therapy to strengthen her legs and ensure she’s healthy enough to travel.

When dogs have medical issues like these, TLC does everything in our power to make them well again, but it puts a very large strain on our finances. We don’t want to leave any dog behind because - at no fault of their own - they need medical care. This is why we’re being so brutally honest and straightforward. We need funds to be able to cover these medical expenses, and still provide support for each of the other dogs in our care.

Paisley is the perfect pup! She’s got brains, heart, and the cutest smile.Paisley is a classic Great Pyrenees mix—independent, confident, and smart enough to figure out how to open the pantry if you forget to lock it. She’s also a total goofball with a big, happy smile and a playful streak that comes out whether she’s zooming around the yard or convincing you to chase her for fun.

She gets along wonderfully with other dogs of all kinds, from tiny puppies to big dogs and everything in between. She’s always up for an adventure and gets so excited when she sees her harness or a car door open. Whether it’s a hike, a walk, or a neighborhood stroll, she’s ready to go.

At home, she’s a dream of a house guest and a loving companion. She’s fully house trained, gentle, and happy to relax in her favorite cool spot on the floor. She doesn’t ask for much—just a few head scratches, a comfy chair nearby, and your company. Once she warms up, she’ll give you that signature “Pyr paw: to ask for more pets and remind you just how sweet, loyal, and full of love she truly is.

Shining the Volunteer Spotlight on Sue Campbell

After losing their beloved dog Rooney, Sue Campbell and her husband Steve weren’t sure they were ready for another dog full-time. Their daughter encouraged them to check out TLC as a way to get their “dog fix” without making a long-term commitment.

“We’ve had so many wonderful dogs in our lives - we volunteer in honor of all they gave to us,” Sue says, “and what we can give back to the dogs who need help.”

They started small, helping with weekend and vacation coverage and attending transports before taking the leap into fostering. Along the way, they learned more about the organization and got to know the other volunteers.

Over the years, Sue has helped with just about everything at TLC - school visits, community events, transports, the Miles for Mutts fundraiser, and more. After fostering about a dozen dogs, Sue and Steve found their Luna and became dog parents once again.

“Today we continue to foster, and Luna is a great foster sibling to them all,” Sue says.

Sue’s favorite part of volunteering? That’s easy - adoption appointments. “So much happiness!” she says.

If you’re considering getting involved with TLC, Sue suggests starting small with short-term commitments. She also recommends taking one of the many classes TLC offers to learn more about its programs and services.

“When you’re ready to volunteer, jump in,” Sue says. “There are so many people who would love to help you!”

November Photo Tip: How to Nail That Fall Aesthetic (According to Your Dog)

Listen, human — it’s November, not “take 47 photos of me sitting in wet leaves” season. If you want that Pinterest-core fall photo, follow my lead:

1. Leaf logistics: Toss some leaves in the air dramatically. I’ll either pose majestically… or sprint away like I’ve seen a ghost. Either way, you’ll get content.

2. Wardrobe matters: A cozy flannel bandanna = yes. A full turkey costume = emotional damage. Choose wisely.

3. Angle game strong: Get low. Like belly-on-the-ground low. You call it “commitment to the shot,” I call it “me watching you struggle.”

4. Natural expressions only: You want joy? Whisper “treat.” You want pure betrayal? Whisper “bath.”

5. Final touches: Add a pumpkin, a mug of something you’ll spill, and a caption like “Falling for fall .” Boom. Influencer status.

Now hand over the snacks — all that modeling burned serious calories.

November Training Tip: The Art of Not Stealing Thanksgiving Dinner

Listen up, humans — November is basically one long game of “Willpower: The Sniff Edition.” Here’s how to help your pup master their holiday manners (and maybe keep your turkey intact):

1. Set the Scene: Practice “leave it” with something boring first — like a green bean. Once I can resist that, then we can level up to turkey. (No promises.)

2. Use Distractions Wisely: Want me to ignore the table? Give me a Kong stuffed with pumpkin and peanut butter. Basically, my own Thanksgiving plate.

3. Teach Guests the Rules: Aunt Carol cannot “accidentally” drop stuffing every five seconds. That’s called sabotage.

4. Praise Progress: If I make it through dinner without launching myself at the gravy boat, I deserve dessert. Yes, dog-safe dessert.

5. Bonus Round: Post-dinner walk = essential. Not for me — for you. I’ve been judging your portion sizes all day.

So this November, let’s train with gratitude, patience, and plenty of treats…
Because “sit” is easier when you smell sweet potatoes.
