But if you've ever considered fostering and worried about the commitment, summer is actually the perfect time to get started. With many foster families traveling, we are always in need of vacation coverage. This provides you the opportunity to experience fostering without a long-term commitment.

As a foster-based rescue, every TLC dog's journey to a forever home begins in the care of a foster family. These dedicated volunteers do much more than provide temporary housing. They offer safety, stability, and love to dogs who may be scared, confused, or simply waiting for a second chance. 

In foster homes, remarkable transformations happen every day. Watching a scared or shy dog blossom into their true self is miraculous to watch. You’ll get to witness frightened dogs find courage, puppies learn good manners, and senior dogs get a new lease on life. TLC dogs don't just survive in foster care; they thrive. The foundation for their future success is built through the patience, compassion, and commitment of our foster families. We don’t just touch canine lives. The work we do also allows adopters to meet dogs who are ready to become cherished family members. Foster families create the bridge between rescue and forever homes, and their impact is truly immeasurable.

No foster walks this journey alone. TLC provides support every step of the way. Not only do you get all of the basic necessities to care for your foster dog, you join a network of volunteers with a wealth of knowledge that helps every foster family feel informed, connected, and confident, whether they are welcoming their first dog or their hundredth.

For many foster families, the experience is life-changing. Every foster dog arrives with a story already in progress. Our foster families help each dog turn the page from a story of survival to a story of resilience, strength, and love. While we may only be a chapter in their journey, they inevitably become part of ours. Fostering isn't always easy, and goodbyes can be bittersweet. Yet the rewards far outweigh the heartache. We have the privilege of witnessing incredible transformations and are reminded time and again that even a small act of love can change a life. They ask for so little and give so much in return. In the end, while we help change their lives, they often change ours even more.

Lend a Paw: Empowering the Next Generation of Rescue

At To Love a Canine Rescue, we believe rescue is about more than saving dogs… it is about building compassionate leaders who understand the power of community, empathy, and action.

That belief is at the heart of our Lend a Paw Program, which gives junior volunteers the opportunity to work directly with rescue mentors to design personalized service projects tailored to their interests, strengths, and community service goals. Whether students are looking to complete service hours for school, clubs, scholarships, or simply want to make a difference, the program creates meaningful, hands-on experiences while supporting rescue dogs in need.

Through Lend a Paw, students gain direct exposure to the realities of rescue while developing leadership, responsibility, teamwork, communication, and advocacy skills that will stay with them long after their projects are complete.

For Grace, a longtime TLC volunteer and student at STEM Academy, the program reinforced something she had already come to love about rescue work: inclusion.

“I really like what TLC supports and stands for as a rescue, especially the thought they put towards including younger people in the rescue process,” she shared.

Grace recently helped organize a Puppy Night event, where children spent the evening interacting with rescue puppies through games and activities. Beyond simply volunteering, she stepped into a leadership role which meant organizing stations, managing materials, and helping ensure the event ran smoothly.

“My favorite part was meeting all the kids involved… and have us all bond together from our love for dogs,” she said.

Over the years, Grace says rescue has transformed how she views animals. “Seeing what dogs have gone through… has made me see dogs as so much more than just a pet.”

Downingtown East student Ishita also participated in organizing Puppy Night through the Lend a Paw Program, helping create an event that connected children with rescue puppies in a fun and meaningful environment.

“I chose TLC Rescue because I have always loved animals and wanted to create a project that would bring kids and puppies together,” Ishita explained.

While the event was filled with playful puppy moments, Ishita says the behind-the-scenes experience taught her just as much. “The most important thing I learned was how much dedication and planning it takes to successfully organize and run an event.”

Navigating challenges with event logistics and space rentals strengthened her communication and teamwork skills while giving her firsthand experience in what it takes to coordinate a successful community initiative.

For Anna, the Lend a Paw Program offered something even deeper… a firsthand look into the emotional impact of rescue work itself. Through transports, adoption events, school visits, and fundraising efforts, Anna experienced both the heartbreak and hope that comes with helping dogs heal.

“The best part of my project was witnessing a dog who was previously living in constant fear learn how to play,” Anna shared.

One transport in particular left a lasting impact. Anna recalls spending time comforting a terrified rescue dog during an early morning arrival.

“I felt so incredibly lucky to have those precious moments with him as we sat alone…and watched the sun rise together.”

Experiences like these helped Anna develop patience and a deeper understanding of trauma-informed care for animals. She also says learning about puppy mills and animal welfare advocacy changed her perspective on justice and responsibility.

“The only way to make a difference regarding social issues is to use your anger and passion regarding injustice to catalyze change,” she reflected.

Sophia discovered through Lend a Paw that rescue is powered by people working together toward a shared purpose. Throughout her project, Sophia immersed herself in nearly every aspect of rescue operations from fostering dogs, helping at adoption events, participating in transports, assisting with fundraisers, to taking on the task of organizing preventatives for every foster dog in TLC’s care.

“My favorite part of the project was the people I worked with and seeing how everyone’s combined efforts truly made a difference,” Sophia explained.

One foster dog named Mariah especially shaped Sophia’s experience. When Mariah first arrived, she was terrified and hid under a kitchen table for days. Slowly, with patience and consistency, she began learning to trust again.

“Mariah changed from scared and distrusting into happy and confident,” Sophia said. “Her journey showed me the powerful impact of rescue work and its ability to completely change an animal’s future.”

Through these experiences, Sophia says she strengthened her teamwork, communication, and time-management skills while learning the importance of perseverance and commitment when helping others.

At The Renaissance Academy, student Maggie Dibble used the Lend a Paw Program to create a school-wide initiative called “Homebase Foster Dogs.” Inspired by TLC’s youth volunteer opportunities, Maggie encouraged K–12 classrooms to symbolically “foster” rescue dogs while collecting donations to support their care.

Watching her school community rally around the project became one of the most rewarding parts of her experience.

“I was honestly overwhelmed in the best way by how many donations there were,” Maggie said. “Seeing my car completely packed was such a rewarding moment.”

Maggie says the project showed her how essential community support is for rescue organizations.

“Every contribution, big or small, directly impacts the care these dogs receive and their chances of finding a home,” she explained.

The Lend a Paw Program is designed to do more than fulfill volunteer hours. It creates opportunities for young people to step directly into rescue work, develop meaningful life skills, and understand the very real impact compassion can have on both animals and people.

From organizing events and fundraising initiatives to comforting frightened dogs and educating their communities, these students are proving that age is never a barrier to making a difference.

As Grace shared so perfectly, “A true selfless act always sparks another.”

Seeking Happy Tail: Meet Kodak

Some dogs arrive with a story that stops you in your tracks. Kodak is one of those dogs.

This handsome four-year-old German Shepherd was pulled from the put-to-sleep list at an overcrowded Mississippi shelter not because he had done anything wrong, but simply because there wasn't enough room. One look at this guy and it's hard to imagine anyone passing him by, but here we are, and now he's waiting for the home he always deserved.

Kodak came into foster care and wasted absolutely no time showing everyone exactly who he is and who he is, is a really, really good boy.

He knows his basic commands (sit, down, backup, shake, and working on stay), walks perfectly on leash without a harness, and is fully housebroken. He's calm and even-keeled with other dogs  (even the reactive ones),   and has yet to meet a person he didn't immediately charm. He's sweet, gentle, and snuggly on his own terms, which if you ask us, makes the cuddles even better.

Now let's talk hobbies, because Kodak has many. He is, first and foremost, deeply committed to fetch and all things ball-related. He also empties his entire toy bin every single day not out of chaos, but out of pure joy. He just wants to play with all of it. Every squeaky toy. Every ball. Every single day. When he's done with playtime, he puts himself into his crate to decompress, like the self-aware, emotionally intelligent gentleman that he is.

He went on a trip to Philadelphia with his foster and handled the whole city like a seasoned traveler,  curious, confident, nose to the ground, and happy as can be in the car. He's also been known to let out a truly unforgettable howl at passing trucks. It sounds less like a guard dog and more like a confused cow, and honestly it only makes him more endearing.

Kodak would do best in a home with someone who has German Shepherd or similar large breed experience, and would thrive with older children or adults. He deserves a family that will match his loyalty, enjoy his personality, and throw the ball  a lot.

13 Years, 8,300 Dogs, and One Heck of a Birthday Party

Can you believe it? We're turning 13 this year. Thirteen years of pulling pups out of tough spots, matching them with people who'd love them silly, and watching tails wag their way into forever homes. Over 8,300 of them, to be exact. That's a whole lot of happy tails, and honestly, we're still a little misty-eyed about it.

So naturally, we're throwing a party. A big one.

Puppypalooza is back — and this year's 13th Birthday Bash is shaping up to be our best yet. Picture it: craft vendors with all the good stuff, a bake sale (the kind where you'll absolutely buy more than you planned), food trucks, a kids zone that'll keep the little ones busy, adoptable dogs ready to charm your socks off, and cold beer from the wonderful folks at Bald Birds Brewing Co.

Thirteen years in, and we're just getting started.

Picture this: It’s 75 degrees, the sun is out, the greens are packed, and a fun round of golf means that an adorable, adoptable pup gets the care it needs.

That’s exactly how it happened, too! Our inaugural golf outing fundraiser was one for the books. We held a sold out event at Downingtown Country Club with 120 golfers in attendance, countless raffle baskets, a silent auction, and a Yappy Hour with foster pups to meet and cuddle.

It was a beautiful day for our community to connect with our mission. Thanks to the generosity of our golfers and our 13 event sponsors, we raised over $10,000 to support the dogs in our care. These funds will cover routine care like vet check ups, preventatives, and microchips. These funds also help us cover the unforeseen medical and surgical costs that come with our promise: to give every dog a chance at a better life.

Dog Training Tip: Reward the Behavior You Actually Want

Dogs are simple creatures. If a behavior works, they’ll do it again. Repeatedly. With confidence.

So if your dog jumps on guests and the guests immediately pet them while yelling “NO DOWN OFF STOP,” congratulations, your dog just learned:

“Flying into people’s rib cages earns attention.”

Instead, reward the behavior you want:

• Four paws on the floor? Treat.

• Calm greeting? Praise.

• Sitting politely instead of body-slamming Grandma? Jackpot reward like they just won the canine lottery.

Dogs don’t automatically understand English lectures about “manners” or “personal space.” They understand outcomes. Your job is basically to become a tiny, emotionally invested vending machine dispensing rewards for good choices.

And remember: consistency matters.
If jumping works sometimes, your dog will train harder than a guy playing slots in Vegas thinking, “THIS is the lucky one.”

Dog Photography Tip: Stop Standing Over Your Dog Like a Disappointed Parent

The #1 mistake people make when photographing dogs? Taking the picture from human height.

When you shoot downward, your dog ends up looking like:

• a tiny potato,

• a cryptid caught on security footage,

• or a defendant in a courtroom sketch.

Instead, get down to your dog’s eye level. Kneel, sit, lie on the floor, commit to the art. Eye-level photos instantly make your dog look more expressive, dramatic, and majestic.

A few bonus tricks:

• Use treats or toys near the camera for alert ears and eye contact.

• Natural light is your best friend. Window light or golden hour can make even the neighborhood trash goblin look angelic.

• Use burst mode. Dogs move approximately 97% faster the second you open your camera app.

• Focus on the eyes. Sharp eyes = professional-looking photo. Blurry eyes = cryptid evidence.

Most importantly: embrace the chaos.
Professional pet photographers take hundreds of photos to get one perfect shot. Your dog is not “bad at pictures.” Your dog is simply an artist committed to motion blur.
