“I thought I could browse without getting attached. I was mistaken. I still remember Vela’s description on To Love a Canine Rescue’s website—she was described as playful and lovable, but also had a feisty side when it came to playing with her littermates. She sounded sweet and sassy—the perfect combination. And when we saw her picture, we just knew she was the one. 

When we took her home that first night, we couldn’t believe how tiny she was, yet so curious and courageous. She loved the snow, squeaky toys, and scarfing down her food like it was a competition. Within just a few days, her big personality started to shine through, and it quickly became clear: she was going to rule the house.

We enrolled her in puppy kindergarten at What a Good Dog, thinking she’d be the star student. But her feisty side had other plans. She became protective of her treats, her space, and of us. While she’s incredibly smart (thanks, food motivation), she struggled with sharing and socializing. Her growth hasn’t been linear, and the journey hasn’t always been easy—but it has been so worth it.

Learning her personality—her energy, her triggers, her likes and dislikes—has shaped us. It’s made us grow not just as her parents, but also as a couple and as individuals. She’s challenged us, changed us, and filled our hearts in ways we never imagined.

We truly believe Vela was meant to be our dog. Every day, she teaches us what unconditional love and loyalty look like. As we approach her second birthday, we’re reflecting on how far she’s come—and how much we’ve all grown together. We’re so excited for the many years ahead.
